Mum Tries Reading English (450 - 2020) (Old English - Modern English) is the 128th episode in the OSFirstTimer series.
Description[edit | edit source]
Diana has always hated old operating systems due to difficulties navigating their command line/text based interfaces, but, what if english itself with the thing she had trouble with? At what point in time does english become completely unrecognisable? Well, check out this video to find out!
In this video, Diana will be given passages from various texts throughout history to read, all of which are in english. The english language however has changed over time. As of 2020, we all speak Modern English which goes from around 1700 - Present Day. Before Modern English we had "Early Modern English" from 1500 - 1700.
Go back even further and You'll find Middle English from around 1150 - 1500 and even earlier from around the 5th century you'll find Old English which was originally written in runes before switching over to the Latin alphabet.
This experience of moving back through time and seeing how the english language has changed is sure to make anybody apreciate anything written in an english that they can actually understand. Hopefully Diana will appreciate older operating systems now ;)
EDIT: Unfortunatly this video has one mistake in it. The 1486 version of The Canterbury Tales I showed Diana appears to be translated from it's original Middle English text in the late 1300's to Middle French. In otherwords, Diana was attempting to read Middle French at that part of the video instead of Middle English. Thanks to "Le Chef Fantome", "Crazy_Matt_x000d_", "John John", "Pato" & "Александр Афонский" for helping me discover this mistake!
